Windows guest OS boot process results in BSOD. An error message appears:

<windows root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe file is missing



  1. Insert the original MS Windows CD into the optical drive of your Mac and connect the disk to the virtual machine by choosing Default CD/DVD-ROM from the Devices menu.

  2. Restart the virtual machine. Press any key to boot from the CD.

  3. Setup menu appears. Press the R key to enter the recovery console.

  4. Select your guest operating system and enter the administrator password.

  5. Type the following command on the command prompt:

    • expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32

  6. Type Y and press Enter to overwrite the file.

  7. Type exit to restart the virtual machine.


Before booting from the CD, please open Configuration Editor and make sure the boot sequence is set to "CD - Hard Disk - Floppy" under the "Resource - Options - Booting" tab.

Also please verify:

  •  CD/DVD-ROM device status is "Enabled"

  • "Connect at startup" option is checked

  • the "Emulation" option is set to "Use CD/DVD - ROM" under the "Resource - CD/DVD-ROM"  tab
