Symptoms

Users are getting bounces from postmaster@hosting.local into their Hosted Exchange 2007 mailboxes. The problem is that users receive bounces from address with fake domain part, not from the domain of POA Provider.

This may be unexpected behavior for customers.

Cause

This is the default Exchange behavior, the postmaster email is postmaster@<AD domain>, unless changed.

Resolution

Follow the steps below to change the default postmaster address.

Postmaster address for Exchange 2007 should be changed on both HUB and EDGE servers:

  1. Login to a HUB server with an account having Exchange Organization Administrator role.
  2. Execute Run > Programs > Microsoft Exchange 2007 > Management Shell
  3. Execute the following cmdlet to set a new address:Get-TransportServer | Set-TransportServer -ExternalPostmasterAddress postmaster@<domain> Replace the <domain> parameter with the desired value.
  4. Login to each EDGE server as a user with local administrator permissions and perform the steps 2-3.
