Symptoms

The user tries to apply custom rules to Apache conf file, but these rules still are not activated when the Apache restarts.

Resolution

Apache server provides a rule-based rewriting engine to rewrite requested URLs ‘on the fly’. All the rewrite rules for the VDS must be added within the following block:

NameVirtualHost *

For example :

NameVirtualHost *
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} ^TRACE
RewriteRule .* - [F]

NOTE: For details about the rewrite rules, please refer to:

http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_rewrite.html

If it is an IP-Based VDS, then Apache server should be restarted after changing the httpd.conf file.
