Resolution

Problem

When clicking on an icon in Helm, I sometimes get the following error:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.

Solution

This indicates that something on your machine is hogging memory. The most likely cause of this is spyware or a virus. You should be able to see in Task Manager the processes that are running, and the amount of memory they are using. For instance, one known process that acts as another and causes memory issues is CTFMON.EXE. This is a Microsoft Office component, so if you do not have office installed, it is likely to be spyware. Run spyware checkers on your machine to make sure your machine is clean, then try Helm again.
