Resolution

Problem
 
When trying to open the Helm Configuration Tool on a server, it fails with the following error:
 
Method ~ of object ~ failed
 
In Event Viewer under "Application", the following errors may appear related to COM+ or MSDTC:
 
MS DTC Transaction Manager start failed. LogInit returned error 0x5.
 
or
 
MS DTC log file not found. After ensuring that all Resource Managers coordinated by MS DTC have no indoubt transactions, please run msdtc -resetlog to create the log file.
 
or
 
Could not start the MS DTC Transaction Manager.
 
 
 
Solution
 
As per the error message, you need to make sure DTC (Distributed Transaction Co-ordinator) is running. To do this, go to:
 
Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Services
 
Choose Distributed Transaction Co-ordinator, right-click it and choose Properties. Set the "Startup type" to Automatic, and choose Start. If the Start button is not highlighted, just click OK. Then right click on DTC again, and click Start.
 
If the service doesn't start and it gives you an error, then you may need to flush the MS DTC service logs as per this article:
 
 
To do this:
 
1.) Open up a command prompt
2.) Type msdtc.exe -resetlog
3.) Press enter.
 
Now try opening the Helm Configuration Tool. It should work without error.
