Resolution

Problem

When I try to delete a domain it fails, and the following errors can be found in the error log:

2004-04-16 17:44:06 DNS.IDNS_RemoveZone The Microsoft DNS Server (SERVERNAME) is currently unavailable. ["E:\WebHost Automation\Helm\System\dnscmd.exe" SERVERNAME /ZoneDelete testdomain.com /f]
2004-04-16 17:44:06 CDomain.DeleteDomainEx The Microsoft DNS Server (SERVERNAME) is currently unavailable. ["E:\WebHost Automation\Helm\System\dnscmd.exe" SERVERNAME /ZoneDelete testdomain.com /f]

Solution

This can be caused by a couple of issues.

Firstly - go to

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools

and make sure DNS is installed. If it isn't, please refer to the Pre-Install Guide.

Secondly, if DNS is installed, make sure that the server name in Helm matches the NetBios (machine) name of the DNS server. If they are different, then this will cause the errors.

Thirdly, you may need to check the RPC service as some Windows Updates switch off the service for MSDNS in the registry. Please refer to this article for more details:
