Symptoms

On an SSH-manageable name server DNS zone files are not updated.

Cause

  1. Network issues. The following records can be found in /var/log/messages on the name server:

    Jul 27 12:43:12 ns4 named[2830]: zone <domain1.tld>/IN/pbas_resolver: refresh: retry limit for master <XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX>#53 exceeded (source 0.0.0.0#0)
Jul 27 12:43:12 ns4 named[2830]: zone <domain1.tld>/IN/pbas_resolver: zone transfer deferred due to quota
Jul 27 12:43:25 ns4 named[2830]: transfer of '<domain2.tld>/IN/pbas_resolver' from <XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX>#53: failed while receiving responses: connection reset

Running "netstat -aon | grep 53" on OBAS server reveals lots of port 53 connections in CLOSE_WAIT status.

  2. pdns service malfunction. There are no related errors in /var/log/hspc/hspc.log and pdns service shows no activity in /var/log/messages.

Resolution

Restart the PowerDNS service on the OBAS server:

# service pdns restart

Search Words

pbas_resolver: zone transfer deferred due to quota

dns records do not propagate

service pdns restart

pbas_resolver: refresh: retry limit for master

failed while receiving responses: connection reset

DNS not synchronized
