Symptoms

After websites was moved from win1 to win3 server which is a new windows 2008 R2 server. The custom pages for 404 error does not show up. Just the default IIS 7.5 error page appears.

In IIS->Error Pages the following warning is shown:

You have configured detailed error messages to be returned for both local and remote requests. When this option is selected, custom error configuration is not used.

Cause

Detailed error messages for remote requests is configured.

Resolution

So change these settings follow the below steps:

  1. Open the IIS7 manager

  2. Select the Server and on its features view, double click on “Error Pages”.

  3. Right click and select the “Edit Feature Settings…” or select the same from the Actions pane (in the right hand side)

  4. Select the “Detailed errors for local requests” radio button and click on OK

  5. Now, even your client browsers will be able to see the Custom error messages.
