Symptoms

I tried to start upgrade but it failed with the following error:

#/root/ppa_upgrade --upgrade
[ERROR]:
Checking hostname of hosts registered in PPA has failed.
Check the following hosts:
        * host 'http.example.com' (13) hostname check failed: Failed to get service node hostname info 'http.example.com (13)': unexpected error

More detailed error can be found in /usr/local/ppa/log/ppaupdate.log log:

[ERROR]: Failed to get service node hostname info 'http.example.com (23)': unexpected error
[DEBUG]: STDERR:
/bin/sh: /tmp/get_hostname_info.sh: Permission denied

Cause

PPA uses /tmp/ partition on the service node to run scripts during upgrade, but /tmp/ is mounted with noexec option, as a result you got Permission denied error:

# mount | grep tmp
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,size=4096m)

Resolution

  1. Remove noexec option and emount /tmp partition.

  2. Rerun upgrade.
