Symptoms

Error while access to Postgres database on Plesk Automation (PA) management node:

psql -h`hostname` -U plesk plesk
connection to database "plesk" failed: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "plesk"

or

pg_dump -h`hostname` -U plesk plesk or
pg_dump: [archiver (db)] connection to database "plesk" failed: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "plesk"

Cause

Hostname do not resolve to the IP address which are used for access to Postgres database.

Resolution

  1. Check current hostname:

    [root@ppa ~]# hostname
    ppa.test.com

  2. Check IP address which are used for access to Postgres database in configuration file /var/lib/pgsql/9.1/data/pg_hba.conf or /var/lib/pgsql/9.0/data/pg_hba.conf (depends on version of installed postgresql package).

  3. Add the following record at the beginning of file /etc/hosts:

    192.168.0.1 ppa.test.com

Note: In case if plesk user is missing in configuration file you can add this user with new line like:

host all plesk <IP address which are used for access to Postgres database> 255.255.255.255 trust
