Symptoms

You want to upgrade your RHEL/CentOS 4 server OS to a newer major version.

Resolution

Red Hat (and its derivatives) do not support in-place upgrades between any major versions (https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Installation_Guide/sn-upgrading-system-x86.html).

There are two options:

  1. You are upgrading an OS from a major version 4 to a major version 5:

    a. Install a fresh box with the desired major OS version;

    b. Refer to the System Administrator Guide for your particular H-Sphere version (http://hsphere.parallels.com/docs/) for the instructions on how to move a specific server role.

  2. You are upgrading an OS from a major version 4 to a major version 6.

    a. Install a fresh box with the desired major OS version;

    b. Upgrade your H-Sphere installation to the version 3.6 SPU 53 as described in https://kb.odin.com/en/114841. If you have Parallels H-Sphere version earlier than 3.5.1, you need to upgrade to 3.5.1 first;

    c. Refer to the System Administrator Guide for the instructions on how to move a specific server role.
