Symptoms

Many Windows provisioning related tasks fail with the following error: The operation can not be completed because the following component is missing or is not running: ActiveDirectory (sc_id #5)

Here is the example of the failed task:
Task ID 10466681
Task name       Collect diskspace usage for service #583
Task description        Collect diskspace usage for service #583
Queue name      ExchangeServiceConfiguration583
Method name     collectDiskUsageHandler
Execution status        Failed
Start not earlier than  May-30-2012 10:44
Finished        May-30-2012 10:47
Output  The operation can not be completed because the following component is missing or is not running: ActiveDirectory (sc_id #5)

Cause

ActiveDirectory service controller is not active. Status of the service controller can be checked at:
POA Provider CP > System Director > Configuration Manager > Service Controllers > find 'ActiveDirectory' service controller

POA checks status of the Active Directory domain controller once in a minute by running periodic task 'Monitor Domain Controllers availability'. If this task fails to check the status, status of the 'ActiveDirectory' service controller will be changed to 'Not active'. Further Windows related tasks will be blocked, until POA is able to connect to AD domain controller.

Resolution

Check the output from the last execution result of the POA periodic task 'Monitor Domain Controllers availability'. From the task output you can find the reason of the failure.

If the task failed by timeout, try to restart POA service and check if the task successfully executed.
