Domain property modification fails with the error: Failed to set password for user

Article ID: 113760, created on Apr 25, 2012, last review on May 11, 2014

  • Plesk for Linux/Unix

Customer cannot change property of his domain. Any domain modification fails with the error:

Error: system user update is failed: Unable to execute usermng: usermng: PAM password change failed: 20, Authentication token manipulation error System error 111: Connection refused usermng: Failed to set password for user 'user_name' System error 111: Connection refused

This error is caused by system misconfiguration. Record  for the domain FTP user is missed in the file /etc/shadow.

Check if the record about domain FTP user exists in the files /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.
# grep ftpuser /etc/passwd
ftpuser x:10001:2523::/var/www/vhosts/domain.tld:/bin/false
# grep ftpuser /etc/shadow

Use the domain FTP user name instead of ftpuser.

Missed entry on the file /etc/shadow can be fixed with the utility pwconv.
# pwconv

This utility creates shadow from passwd. Missed record for user should be created.
# grep ftpuser /etc/shadow
