SmartSelect allows you to open files of a particular type stored on Mac OS X using Windows OS applications and visa versa.

Smart Select is automatically applied after Windows virtual machine is created and Parallels Tools are installed in that virtual machine.

In case the default SmartSelect settings don't fit your needs, you can fine tune its preferences.

For example:

*.doc file opened by Microsoft Word from Windows VM, but you need it to be opened by TextEdit
1) Right click on the *.doc. file and select “Open With -> Choose Program…
2) Select “TextEdit (Mac)” program to open such kind of applications and check “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file

*.xml file is opened by Windows, but you have special program on Mac to open it:
1) In Mac OS X you need to right click on the *.xml file icon, select “Get Info” and go to “Open with:" tab.
2) Select desired application to open files of this type and press “Change All…” button.

If you do not need SmartSelect from Mac to Windows at all, you can disable it by unchecking “Share Windows Application to Mac” option from Virtual Machine Configuration –> Options –> Applications tab.
